Learning outcomes

Unit 3 & 4
  • Learn about the history of the site, and how people have interacted with the this environment overtime
  • Explore the competing uses and demands - between human needs and conservation
  • Examine the management strategies and the challenges of sustaining the environment
  • Learn about Acts and/or Conventions related to the management and sustainability of this outdoor environments, including the Ramsar Convention
  • Learn how Melbourne Water and Traditional Owners work together to manage land and water
Unit 1 & 2
  • Describe the characteristics of different outdoor environments - wetlands, grasslands and freshwater
  • Learn about human activities undertaken in outdoor environments and their impacts on those environments
  • Find out about identification and management of threatened species
  • Encounter career opportunities in outdoor environments
  • Learn how environmental research informs and guides sustainable management

 Students will

  • Explore the sewage treatment plant by bus
  • Observe the process of sewage treatment, from when sewage enters the plant to its treatment and reuse or release
  • Explore the Ramsar listed wetlands and observe the flora and fauna
  • Complete logbook recordings and observations

Bookings

Submit your booking request by selecting available dates in the calendar. We require at least four weeks' notice for tour bookings. 

Note:
  1. Prices are quoted per person and are GST inclusive
  2. No additional cost for teaching staff
  3. A minimum $375 fee applies to your booking
  4. Maximum group size is 60
  5. Submitting a booking request does not constitute a confirmed booking or final price

Bus hire

Groups must supply a bus for the tour and ensure the bus company has an appropriate public liability insurance policy ($10 million minimum). 

Safety requirements

For safety, all visitors to the Western Treatment Plant must meet minimum dress standards that include:
  • Required: long sleeves, long pants/trousers and enclosed shoes. 
  • Not allowed: shorts, skirts, open-toed shoes, high heels or sandals.

Additional information

  • Visits will be cancelled on days declared a Total Fire Ban or catastrophic danger rating or when air quality is very poor or extremely poor 
  • Tours to the wetlands will be cancelled on days of extreme, catastrophic and Total Fire Ban danger ratings.
