National Science Week comes to the WTP!

This National Science Week come on down to the Western Treatment Plant to learn more about the science and innovation that takes place, to ensure wildlife; including some of the world’s rarest bird and frog species, will thrive for generations to come.

A free shuttle bus will be running from Werribee Station to the Western Treatment Plant 


PROGRAM   


Wonderful World of Water Tour - from 10.30am

Jump on a bus and take a tour of the Western Treatment Plant and discover a wonderful world of water!  
Discover the largest sewage treatment plant in Melbourne and see how our waste is turned into reusable resources and clean, recycled water.  Explore where some of this water feeds into the vast, Ramsar-listed wetland on the site, which is home to an amazing array of birds and animals, and where endangered species survive.   


Grasslands Planting Tour  - from 10.30am 

Roll up your sleeves and join Melbourne Water’s Waterwatch team, NatureWest and Little River Landcare in a hands-on planting experience.

Super Sewage
Choose Your Own Adventure Suitable for ages 6 –12     

There’s a hidden water world below our city – the network of sewerage tunnels that run below our homes. Participate in this fun experience that explores this world beneath our feet! Choose your own adventure as you move, colour, dance…and make fart noises!  

The Future Water Story   
Suitable for ages 12 plus 

Have you ever wondered how one small choice that you make today, can impact how your whole city might look in the future?  Come and play this immersive, new digital experience just launched at the Western Treatment Plant!   

Plus lots of other free, family-friendly activities throughout the day! 

Safety requirements

For safety, all visitors to the Western Treatment Plant must meet minimum dress standards that include:

  • Required: long sleeves, long pants/trousers and enclosed shoes. 
  • Not allowed: shorts, skirts, open-toed shoes, high heels or sandals.

Additional information

  • Visits will be cancelled on days declared a Total Fire Ban or catastrophic danger rating or when air quality is very poor or extremely poor 
  • Tours to the wetlands will be cancelled on days of extreme, catastrophic and Total Fire Ban danger ratings.
